Compassionate Caren

Compassionate Caren in the Big Bad World

Compassionate Caren in the Big Bad World is an award-winning, character-driven short film that follows Caren, an opinionated, middle-aged control freak who fights to stay relevant in a world that no longer responds to her the way it used to. As she loses her footing, Caren faces a stark choice: change her behavior or demand that society finally accept her as she is. The film uses sharp humor and emotional honesty to investigate whether someone like Caren can earn understanding, redemption, or even save herself from her own worst instincts.

Starring Faith Murphy, Susan Macke Miller, Steve Parnell, and Dean Shortland, the film has earned numerous honors on the festival circuit—including multiple Best Actor awards for Faith Murphy and several Best Film awards. Conceived and produced by Faith Murphy, Compassionate Caren grew out of her interest in the deeper stories behind people: How did they get here? What humanity lies underneath? Are they beyond saving, or simply misunderstood? Through her production company, Over 40 Films, Murphy is dedicated to telling complex, under explored stories about characters beyond society’s typical leading-role age bracket.
